City Voices Saga Continues
New office, new possibilities
Daniel S. Frey, Editor in Chief
City Voices finally moved into its new space in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, a largely Caribbean, African American and Latino neighborhood. The building in which we are located was once a school building and nearby are public middle and high schools. There’s a big inner-city vibe here that is at once very laid back and tense.
We have donated computers, used furniture and other used technology that includes a network of five workstations, fax machine and a scanner. We are “good to go” with our piecemeal equipment. The next step is to find the volunteers, preferably mental health consumers of color from the surrounding area to give our training program a try. Once trained, volunteers with help us to sustain the programs that include New York City Voices, the newspaper you are reading, event planning for conferences and comedy shows, starting support groups, sales and other fundraising activities.
City Voices waits with baited breath for its tax exempt recognition from the Internal Revenue Service in order to be fully independent. We are on our way with enough money to sustain us for a year, revolving sales income, professional volunteers who offer their help and support for a short while until their role is complete, our editorial board of many years and our fairly new board of directors that formed in January 2007.
Still, my mind if focused on long-term longevity beyond even my own lifespan. How can this be done? If you have ideas or want to volunteer, please get in touch. Join us for our office warming.
