Frequently Asked Questions About the MTA Reduced Fare

Question: Where Can I Get a Reduced Fare Application For Me and For Others?

Answer: There are several ways to get Reduced Fare Applications. Visit the MTA's Reduced Fare Program office at 370 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201 during business hours to pick-up your applications. Remember: get extra applications to share with other people you know who may need them. Call Ms. Ruth Pasquale, Director of the MTA's Reduced Fare Program, at (718) 243-7394, and request that she mail you as many applications as you need for yourself and others.

You can try visiting the MTA's New York office at 347 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10017, or call Mr. Douglas Sussman, the MTA's Deputy Director of Government and Community Relations at (212) 878-7469, and ask him to mail you as many Applications as needed. In the past, the New York Office stocked Applications. Request that they do so now. Visit Fountain House's Advocacy Resource Center at 425 West 47th Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10036, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to pick up an Application.

Call the MTA's Reduced Fare Program number: (718) 243-7394 and find out when the Reduced Fare MetroBus will be visiting your neighborhood. You can get applications there and receive help to complete it. You can also have the necessary photo taken there and have your signature notarized.


Question: I Picked Up An Application, But I Am Having Trouble Completing It. How May I Get Help To Complete It?

Answer: You may receive help to complete your application from the MTA's MetroBus when it visits your neighborhood. Call the MTA to find out the schedule for your area. You can call the Fountain House Advocacy Resource Center at (212) 582-0340 extension 245, or one of the Half Fare Coalition members in your area to get assistance.


Question: I Completed My Application, But It Was Returned To Me. What Should I Do?

Answer: If your application is returned to you, it does not mean that you are not eligible. You probably are eligible. The MTA has been returning applications for many reasons such as their inability to reach your doctor by phone. When they can't reach your doctor, they return your application to you. Don't give up. Review the letter you received from the MTA and get help to re-submit your application. Members of the coalition are trying to eliminate these barriers.


Question: I Feel Like I Have Been Mistreated By The MTA. What Should I Do?

Answer: If you feel you have been mistreated by the MTA, call Mr. Peter Glass, Debevoise & Plimpton, at (212) 909-7217. He is compiling information regarding the way in which the Reduced Fare Program is being implemented.
