This year the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill held their 2002 convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. I brought my mother who thought it was "out of this world" because it was not only very informative, but the people she met were very inspiring, and "penetrated her heart." She especially enjoyed hearing from consumers overcoming the barriers to recovery, while maintaining very high goals and at the same time helping others. "They are so capable to get to where they got," my mother said. As a psychiatric nurse for twenty years she thought she knew it all. The convention made her realize there is still a lot she does not know and a lot she wants to do to play her part in the mental health advocacy movement. For anyone who wants to start or join a support group for family members or for consumers in the New York City area, please call Susan Saler at NAMI NYC 212-684-3365.
