The Self-Help Source

The Self-Help Source is a peer-run, state-wide clearinghouse of self-help information on mental health that serves consumers/survivors/ex-patients (c/s/xs) in New York State. We respond to calls, faxes, e-mails and letters.

The wide range of services we provide extends from assisting people in finding support groups and providing information on topics of mental health self-help, to offering free subscriptions to our weekly online and our twice-yearly mailed newsletters. All of our services are listed on our website, www.selfhelpsource.org, which also includes a database of articles with direct online links.

Our New Free Lending Library

Our latest service is our free lending library of self-help mental health books. Our collection covers a variety of topics including biographical accounts of recovery, self-help workbooks and guides, information on diagnoses, alternative healing and humor to name a few. Some of the books we offer include: A Beautiful Mind, Can I Get a Witness?, For Sisters, When the Blues is More Than A Song, Electroboy, Natural Healing for Depression, New Hope for Borderline Personality Disorder and The Wellness Recovery Action Plan.

In an effort to make information in Spanish available to our Spanish-speaking readers we have just included the following title in our lending library, Las Siete Creencias: Una Guía Para Ayudar A Las Latinas A Reconocer Y Superar La Depresión by Belisa Lozano-Vranich and Jorge Petit. It is the only book of its kind that we know of that deals with the practicalities of dealing with depression among the Latina population. We do have the English version, The Seven Beliefs: A Step-by-Step Guide to Help Latinas Recognize and Overcome Depression available as well.

Books are loaned for a four-week period. They are sent out via the US Postal Service with postage-paid return envelopes included to mail them back to us at the end of the lending period.
