It’s Free and Fun to Meet the Legislators
Making our voices and our numbers count

On Tuesday, January 31, 2006, many people in the state of New York got up early in the morning to get on buses to go to the capital Albany. They were going to meet with legislators on such topics as COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment), the SHU (Solitary Housing Unit) bill, adult home funding, access to mental health housing for homeless consumers, Timothy’s Law and more.
We arrived in Albany at the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, went down to the Egg, and there, were given breakfast and welcoming packs. Then we entered the main stage where we played a role on how to discuss the many topics we wanted to get across with the legislators such the SHU, which I have been working on with the Advocacy Office at Community Access with Emily and Vuka.
We had lunch and got into groups and talked about how we would talk during the state legislative visit. I was on the Harlem and the Bronx list. My team leaders had a plan to talk about the issues. We were all given a chance to talk about the issues of the day and on personal ones too. I was able to take some photographs in one office. To me, the day was very productive.
